Guanacaste, Costa Rica has the nickname of “golden coast” because of its plethora of beautiful beaches. You can literally spend your entire vacation visiting a different beach every day, and best of all each beach has something different to offer.
Listed below are 5 of our favorite Guanacaste beaches in province that we recommend you visit while on vacation.
We may be a little bias because we own a vacation rental house on Playa Hermosa beach, but we think this is the best beach around!
With its gray sands and clear blue waters, the name “beautiful beach” fits perfectly. Despite its popularity, the beach is rarely crowded and is a good destination for those looking for a peaceful day in the sun.
Additionally, Playa Hermosa is wonderful for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. Hermosa earned the Blue Flag award for its efforts in maintaining its natural treasures as well as providing safety.
If you’re looking for a quiet beach to stay at in the Gulf of Papagayo, head to Playa Ocotal. This small black sand beach is just a mere 3 km (1.9 miles) away from the popular beach town of Playas del Coco.
Ocotal can barely count as a town when compared to Coco but it’s a nice beach to escape the busy crowds. It has decent snorkeling, our cliffside vacation rental house and restaurants and is a great launch point if you want to do scuba diving or fishing.
Playa Panama, Costa Rica is a beach on the Guanacaste coast that offers another beautiful and tranquil environment.
It is located in the southern part of Bahía Culebra with peaceful waters and a very laid back atmosphere. Since this beach doesn’t have a town center or downtown, it’s very quiet.
You won’t ever have to deal with crowds!
With soft white sand and calm blue waters enveloped by a lush forest, Playa Cabuyal delighted us in all our senses. What makes this beach so special is that nothing is around. No houses, no hotels, nothing. Just nature.
Playa Cabuyal is about a 40 minute drive from Playas del Coco but is absolutely worth the drive. Get away from the crowds, the tourists and busy beach towns to beautiful Cabuyal for some peace and quiet. We went on a weekend and saw no more than two local families there, fishing and enjoying the day with their loved ones.
Playa Penca is a very tranquil and beautiful beach stretching along a small cove, just a few kilometers away from the garish lighting and incessant noise.
Playa Penca is a small, secluded cove which nestles demurely in between the resort of Las Catalinas and Playa Flamingo. Bordered on either side by rocky points and jungle, this white sanded beach gets little waves, making it a peaceful place to swim, picnic, and play in the sand.
It’s one of the well-kept secret by the locals that love going there to rest and enjoy the beautiful sunsets!
